In March 2013, Patrick J. Adams landed in Singapore on a promotional trip for Suits, with his then-girlfriend Troian Bellisario in tow. The 31-year-old actor, who played the unlicensed lawyer Mike Ross, spent an afternoon talking in a hotel suite about the show, his co-stars and how he met the woman he would later marry.
Their story began on stage. Adams said the two met in 2009 while doing the Los Angeles production of the play Equivocation, where she was cast opposite him as his romantic interest. In his telling, that was more or less that. Fourteen years on, the details are still the ones the couple’s biographers return to.
A first trip to Singapore
Adams said it was his first time in the city. The only other place he knew in the region was Hong Kong, where his father had worked. He was full of praise for Gardens by the Bay, particularly the Cloud Forest dome, which he and Bellisario toured while jet-lagged. He also visited the rooftop of Marina Bay Sands, and he called Singaporeans warm and welcoming. He said he hoped to explore quieter neighbourhoods such as Little India and Chinatown on a return visit.
How he and Troian Bellisario got together
After the play, Adams said, the two had a relationship that hit a rough patch. He then auditioned for a guest role on Pretty Little Liars, Bellisario’s show, something he said he would not normally have done. He got the part. USA Network’s own account of the couple’s history places that guest appearance in 2010, and says they got back together around then.
Asked whether Bellisario might turn up on Suits, he said the creator, Aaron Korsh, got on well with her and the idea had been joked about. The obstacle was scheduling, since Pretty Little Liars shot around 25 episodes a year. She did eventually appear: she played Claire Bowden, a law student who catches Mike’s eye, in season 4 and returned for one more episode in season 5.
Harvey, Rachel and the on-screen chemistry
Adams described an immediate bond with Gabriel Macht, who played Harvey Specter. The two had not done a chemistry read together, he said, but sat down early to agree on how they wanted to work. He said Macht stayed at his mother’s home in Toronto for a time. They also had a running contest on set over who could memorise the dense legal dialogue fastest. Adams said he simply read it aloud, while Macht leaned on notecards.
He called Meghan Markle, who played Rachel Zane, a sweetheart and a dear friend. He said the two, then the youngest members of the cast, supported each other through auditions. On Mike and Rachel, he expected the “will they, won’t they” tension to be resolved by the end of the season.
Mike Ross, underdogs and the suits themselves
Adams saw himself in Mike: a fixation on one problem, a soft spot for underdogs and a struggle with confidence that eased as the show went on. He recalled stepping in for classmates being picked on at school and getting beaten up a couple of times as a result.
On wardrobe, he said the suits were tailored to fit. He said Macht wore Tom Ford, while he mostly wore Zegna and, more recently, pieces made by a Toronto tailor. Wearing them at 3am, he admitted, was less glamorous than it looked. He compared them to armour that forces you to stand differently. He added that he had come to like them more than he expected.
The season 2 finale, he promised, would put Mike and Harvey’s relationship to the test. He knew little about season 3 beyond the fact that the firm would be in a precarious place. At the time, Suits S2 aired on Mondays at 8pm on DIVA Universal on StarHub TV Channel 512.
Where Adams and Bellisario are now
Adams and Bellisario got engaged in February 2014 and married in December 2016 in California. They now have three daughters. In early 2026 Adams shared on Instagram that their third child had arrived. At a March 2026 premiere, he told People that listening, patience and laughter were what kept the marriage going.
Suits ran from 2011 to 2019. Adams left at the end of season 7 and came back for a handful of episodes in the final season. The show found a vast new audience on Netflix, which led NBC to commission the spin-off Suits LA, but that series lasted only one season.
Adams’s recent work is Taylor Sheridan’s The Madison on Paramount+, whose cast includes Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell. TVLine reported in July 2026 that he is set to return for its second season. In early July 2026 he also posted, on Instagram Stories, a pitch for a Suits revival that would reunite Mike and Rachel. He said he had no knowledge of any plans and would join only if the main cast came back too.
