Kate Walsh Shares Her Biggest Beauty Tip: Hydrate Inside and Out

What is Kate Walsh’s biggest beauty tip?

Hydration. In interviews, the actress has returned to the same idea again and again. Asked by NewBeauty about her routine, she answered with the same word three times: hydrate. She said she has always had dry skin and treats it from within and from the outside.

In another interview, she put it more simply, saying “It’s all about hydration.” That is the thread running through almost every product and habit she has shared.

How does she hydrate her skin?

She told NewBeauty that she drinks a lot of water, takes omega oils and makes sure she eats good, healthy fats. On top of that, she layers products on her skin, including oils and an exfoliating step. She also said she uses Crepe Erase.

She has also named a few specific products:

  • Watts Beauty hyaluronic acid, priced at $15 when she discussed it. She uses it alongside any serum, oil or cream on her face to lock in moisture.
  • Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream All-Over Miracle Oil, priced at $29 when she discussed it. She called it magical for her dry skin, in summer or winter, and said she uses it all over her body.
  • Biologique Recherche Lotion P50 1970, which she pats on every morning and night. She said she doesn’t use fillers or Botox and has seen a big improvement with it.

Does she really recommend oil?

Yes, and it is perhaps her most distinctive tip. She told NewBeauty that she always puts oil in the bath. She also said some people avoid oil because they fear it will clog pores, but she believes the right kind won’t. Applying it while the skin is still wet, she said, helps lock in hydration.

She credits her longtime makeup artist with part of that thinking. In an earlier interview, she called emu oil the one product she couldn’t live without. She said she learned about it from her makeup artist on set, and that it is good for hydrating and for healing burns and small blemishes.

What about her eyes?

Her hydration advice goes beyond skin. She has said that people think about hydrating their skin but not their eyes. When her vision began to look blurry, an optometrist told her she had dry eyes, a condition caused by not producing enough tears. She has since promoted preservative-free lubricating drops and told NewBeauty she carries them everywhere. This is her own experience, not medical advice, and anyone with similar symptoms should see an eye specialist.

What does she do with makeup?

Years earlier, she told one beauty site that she doesn’t wear makeup when she isn’t working. She said she has plenty of eyeshadow palettes, especially four-shade Chanel ones, and likes Make Up For Ever lengthening mascara.

She also described how her makeup artist builds a dewy look on set. He mixes a liquid highlighter and a moisturiser into the foundation, sets it with translucent powder, and finishes with Nars Bronzing Powder in Laguna on the cheekbones and temples. On the same set, individual lashes made what she called a huge difference.

For her skincare routine at that time, she said she used a Clarisonic brush religiously. She used a makeup remover wipe first and then cleansed with the brush, and she also liked Kate Somerville products.

Does she have her own products?

Yes. She founded Boyfriend LLC, a beauty and lifestyle company, in 2010. E! reported on its Boyfriend fragrance and a Los Angeles pop-up shop that ran through 15 August in the year of that report. She named the brand’s Hand & Body Crème among her must-haves, praising its colloidal oatmeal for increasing skin moisture, along with a Boyfriend Pulse Point rollerball with an almond seed oil base for dry patches.

Her lighter advice to E! was that happiness is the best makeup, with a little mascara never hurting anyone.
